“I’m alive. I’m sober. I’m happy.”

Those were NBA Pro Lamar Odom’s words on Good Morning America as he described his drug addiction journey. Now sober, he has opened up to the news and media outlets about how he went from nearly fatally overdosing in a Las Vegas brothel and other near-death experiences to sobriety and the road to recovery. “I went to rehab and did some other things, but ketamine came into my life at the right time.” He said in his interview.

Lamar Odom, the 41 year old former Lakers star and Kardashian ex described how his ketamine treatments have been absolutely vital in his recovery process by stopping his urges for cocaine. “I don’t wake up looking to do lines…or waking up in a dark place or feeling unfulfilled,” he reports. All of his ketamine treatments have been administered under medical supervision. While now recovered, the basketball star doesn’t want to stop his treatments yet. “I don’t think I will stop it…I wouldn’t want to try to stop to be great. If I have greatness inside of me, I want to try to get it out.”

Ketamine hasn’t only helped Odom with his drug addiction, but it has also helped him cope with depression. In addition to losing his mother as a child and his son at only 6 months old, Odom has endured many heart wrenching tragedies close to home throughout his life, including the recent loss of his friend Kobe Bryant.

Before, Odom said that he would deal with his depression by turning to drugs. But now, ketamine has helped him process without abusing substances in hopes to find relief. “When Kobe [Bryant] passed away, you know, the old Lamar, that’d have been every excuse in the world for me to go get high, [but] doing drugs didn’t even enter my mind.”

Mental Health, Ketamine, and Depression

Lamar Odom doesn’t want to be the drug recovery exception. He’s become an advocate for ketamine treatments for drug recovery, depression, and overall mental health. He especially wants to reach out to the Black community — particularly black men — with the positive hope of mental health awareness and ketamine treatments to overcome depression, drug addiction, and more. “Admitting you are depressed or asking for help is a challenge for anyone,” Odom says. He plans on discussing his drug recovery journey in his Lamar Odom Reborn documentary, which will be released later this week on YouTube and various other streaming channels. “My hope is that sharing my journey in Reborn will open a dialogue for millions of people.”
